1. Why soil moisture sensors are essential

Under-irrigation: the plant enters water stress, immediately reducing fruit set, degrading quality and dramatically cutting the final harvest.
Over-irrigation: water passes below the root zone and is lost to deeper layers, leaching expensive fertiliser (nitrogen leaching) with it. At the same time roots suffocate, favouring destructive fungal diseases such as phytophthora and root rot.

New water-metering legislation (by the end of 2026): under the relevant joint ministerial decision, installing measurement systems (water meters) becomes mandatory on all farm holdings — private boreholes and TOEB/GOEB networks alike. Water pricing changes to a fixed charge plus a variable charge per cubic metre consumed. The more water you waste, the more (and progressively more expensively) you pay, plus the corresponding environmental levy.

Evapotranspiration is the sum of water evaporating from the soil and water released by the plant through its leaves (transpiration). The Agrivate digital weather station calculates ET in real time from air temperature and humidity, solar radiation and wind speed.
How optimal irrigation works: the system combines ET (environmental water demand) with soil sensor readings (supply and reserve).
